What your Venus sign is
Your Venus sign is the sign of the zodiac that Venus occupied at the moment you were born. In modern astrology Venus is the planet of attraction, affection and what we value, so its sign is read as a style of loving and liking: what draws you to a person, how you show care, and what you find beautiful or worth paying for. It sits alongside the Sun sign and Moon sign rather than replacing them, and many people find it describes their taste in relationships better than their Sun sign does.
Why Venus stays close to the Sun
Seen from Earth, Venus never strays far from the Sun. It can be at most about 48 degrees away, which is a little more than one and a half signs. That has a neat consequence: your Venus sign is always your Sun sign, the sign before it, or the sign after it, or in rare cases two signs away. A Gemini Sun can have Venus in Taurus, Gemini or Cancer, and occasionally in Aries or Leo. The tool shows the exact sign and degree, so you can see where yours falls.
How the tool finds it
The tool turns your local birth time into universal time using the time zone that applied at your birthplace on that date, including daylight saving. It then reads the position of Venus at that moment from Swiss Ephemeris samples, filled in between samples to within about two arcseconds. The position is an ecliptic longitude, from 0 to 360 degrees, measured from the March equinox. Dividing by 30 gives the sign and the remainder gives the degree within it.
This is the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology. The sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology is about 24 degrees behind it today, so Venus usually appears one sign earlier there. Our sign in both systems tool shows the two side by side for your Sun, Moon and Rising.
When the birth time is not known
Venus moves slowly, by at most about 1.25 degrees a day, and spends a month or more in each sign. If you do not know your birth time, the tool uses the whole of your birth date. On most days Venus stays in one sign and the answer is certain. On the day it changes sign, the tool says so and gives the time of the change, so you can see which sign applies to which part of the day. If you know whether you were born before or after that time, you have your answer.
Retrograde Venus
About every nineteen months Venus appears to move backwards against the stars for around six weeks. This is an effect of the changing positions of Earth and Venus, not a real reversal. If Venus was retrograde at your birth, the tool says so. Some astrologers read a retrograde Venus as a more private or reflective approach to love and values, and some pay it little attention. Neither reading is a flaw or a prediction, and many people with a retrograde Venus describe nothing out of the ordinary.
What to make of it
Treat the description as one thread in a chart. The signs give a vocabulary for talking about tendencies, such as the careful loyalty of Taurus or the freedom-seeking of Sagittarius, and the descriptions in the tool are written in that spirit. They are not findings of psychology and they do not predict how any relationship will go. If a description fits, enjoy it; if it does not, that is useful to know too. Frequently asked questions
↳ How can my Venus sign differ from my Sun sign?
Venus is never more than about 48 degrees from the Sun as seen from Earth, so it can be one sign before or after your Sun sign, and rarely two. Many people share their Sun sign with Venus.
↳ Do I need my birth time for my Venus sign?
Usually not, since Venus changes sign only about once a month. If it changed sign on your birth date, the tool tells you the time of the change so you can see which sign you were born under.
↳ Which zodiac does the tool use?
The tropical zodiac of Western astrology, measured from the March equinox. The sidereal sign used in Vedic astrology is usually the previous sign.
↳ What does a retrograde Venus mean?
Venus appears to move backwards for about six weeks every nineteen months. Some astrologers read it as a more inward approach to love and values. It is an interpretation, not a prediction, and many people with it notice nothing unusual.
↳ Can my Venus sign tell me who I will be compatible with?
It can give a way to talk about what you value in love, but it cannot predict a relationship. Compatibility depends on far more than one placement, and the tradition offers themes, not verdicts.
