What a tarot birth card is

A tarot birth card is a card of the Major Arcana that tarot readers connect to a person’s date of birth, by a method borrowed from numerology. The idea is that the digits of the date can be reduced to a number from 1 to 22, and the 22 cards of the Major Arcana carry the numbers 0 to 21. It was popularised in the late twentieth century by tarot writers, notably Mary K. Greer, and is a modern custom, not an ancient one. Readers use the birth card as a theme to reflect on, a bit like a sun sign, and many enjoy exploring the card each year.

How the card is worked out

The method has three steps, and the tool shows each one for your date.

  1. Add every digit of your birth date, day, month and year, as written in full. For 17 March 1985 that is 1 + 7 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 34.
  2. Reduce until the total is 22 or lower. The Major Arcana only goes up to 21, and by convention 22 stands for The Fool, which is also numbered 0. So 34 becomes 3 + 4 = 7, which is the card The Chariot.
  3. If your number has two digits, reduce it once more. A total of 10 to 21 gives a second card: 19 is The Sun, and reducing it gives 1 + 9 = 10, The Wheel of Fortune, and then 1 + 0 = 1, The Magician. Writers call the larger number the personality card and the last single digit the soul card, with any card between them as a link. A total that is already one digit, like 7, gives one card, which is both.

A date that adds to 22 gives The Fool and then, by 2 + 2, The Emperor (4).

The tool also gives a card for the current year, using the same method with the present year in place of your birth year. Readers treat it as a theme for the year, in the same spirit.

Which cards the tool uses

The cards follow the Rider-Waite-Smith order, in which Strength is number 8 and Justice is 11. Some older decks swap those two, so if you use a Marseille-style deck, the numbers 8 and 11 may be reversed for you. The tool links each card to its full guide, with the upright and reversed meanings and a question to reflect on.

How to use the result

Treat the birth card as a mirror. A card is not a verdict on your character or a prediction of your fate, and no card is a warning; cards that look severe, such as The Tower, are read by experienced readers as symbols of change. Many people find it useful to read about their card and ask which parts feel true, which feel like a stretch, and what they would like to do with the theme. For another number-based reading, try the life path number calculator, which uses a similar kind of digit reduction. You can also draw a tarot card of the day and browse the Major Arcana in full.

Frequently asked questions

↳ How do I find my tarot birth card?

Add all the digits of your birth date, reduce the total until it is 22 or less, and take the Major Arcana card with that number, counting 22 as The Fool. The tool does the sums and shows each step.

↳ What is the difference between a birth card and a soul card?

When your total is 10 or more, the first number gives your personality card and the single digit it reduces to gives your soul card. If your total is already a single digit, both are the same card.

↳ Is the birth card an old tradition?

No. It is a modern practice from tarot numerology, popularised in the late twentieth century. Different writers reduce the numbers in slightly different ways, so you may see another card in another book.

↳ Does my birth card predict my future?

No. Tarot is a tool for reflection, not a proven way to predict events. The card offers a theme to think about, and nothing in it is a promise or a warning.

↳ Why do some sources give a different card for the same date?

Sources vary in how they treat totals of 22, in whether Strength and Justice are numbered 8 and 11 or the other way round, and in whether they give one card or a chain of cards. The tool states its choices so you can compare.
