Everything is calculated in your browser. Your birth details are not sent to us.
The three signs in a sentence each
- Sun sign: the sign the Sun was in on your birthday. It is the one used in newspaper horoscopes and is traditionally linked with identity and vitality.
- Moon sign: the sign the Moon was in. It moves about one sign every two and a half days, so it needs your date and ideally your time. Traditionally it is linked with emotions and habits.
- Rising sign: the sign on the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born. It changes about every two hours, so it needs a birth time. Traditionally it is linked with how you meet the world.
How the chart is worked out
Planet positions come from Swiss Ephemeris data, expressed in the tropical zodiac, which starts at the March equinox. Houses use the Placidus system by default, with a Whole Sign option, which gives each sign one house starting from the Rising sign. The Placidus code is checked against the Swiss Ephemeris for 200 random births from 1950 to 2075 at latitudes up to 60 degrees and agrees to a small fraction of an arcminute. Above the polar circle Placidus cannot be drawn and the tool says so. See the method page for the details.
Frequently asked questions
↳ What if I do not know my birth time?
You still get your Sun sign and usually your Moon sign. If either planet changed sign on your birth date, the tool tells you both possibilities and when the change happened, so a family story such as "it was in the afternoon" may be enough to settle it. The Rising sign and houses need the time.
↳ Why is my Sun sign different from what another site says?
Most often because you were born within a day of a sign change, where the exact time and place decide. Sites also differ in the zodiac they use. This site shows the tropical (Western) zodiac here and the sidereal (Vedic) one in your sign in both systems.
↳ Which dates can I use?
Births from 1950 onwards, because that is the range of the ephemeris data the tool reads.
