What your Mercury sign is

Mercury is the planet of thinking, speaking, writing, learning and getting about. In modern astrology the sign Mercury was in when you were born is read as your style of thought and communication: whether you decide quickly or weigh things up, speak plainly or carefully, and learn by talking, reading or doing. It is a good companion to the Sun sign, which is often described as your core drive, and to the Moon sign, described as your emotional habits.

Mercury hugs the Sun

Mercury is the planet closest to the Sun, and seen from Earth it never gets more than about 28 degrees from it. That is under one sign. So your Mercury sign is either the same as your Sun sign or the sign just before or after it; it can never be further away. Mercury stays close to the Sun for most of its cycle, so many people share both signs, and the further Mercury was from the Sun on your birth date, and the nearer your Sun was to the edge of its sign, the likelier a different Mercury sign becomes. The tool gives the exact sign and degree.

How the tool finds it

The tool converts your local birth time to universal time, using the time zone and daylight saving rules that applied at your birthplace on that date. It then reads Mercury’s position for that instant from Swiss Ephemeris samples, filling the gaps by interpolation to within about two arcseconds. The position is an ecliptic longitude measured from the March equinox in the tropical zodiac, and each sign covers 30 degrees. The tool also tells you if Mercury was close to the edge of a sign, since a small difference in time or place could then change the answer.

Mercury is one of the fastest planets, moving up to about two degrees a day, and it may change sign on your birth date. If you do not know your birth time, the tool shows both signs and the time of the change in your local clock, which lets you decide if you know whether you were born before or after it.

Mercury retrograde at birth

Mercury appears to move backwards three or four times a year, for about three weeks each time, so a sizeable share of people are born with it retrograde. If that applies to you, the tool says so. Some astrologers read a retrograde Mercury as a reflective, inward-turning thinker who rehearses before speaking, and others pay it no special attention. It is different from the widely discussed Mercury retrograde periods in the news, which affect everyone equally and which we explain in what Mercury retrograde means. Being born with it retrograde is not a flaw, and it does not predict trouble with communication.

Making sense of the description

The description is a short portrait in the language of modern astrology, one thread in a chart. A Mercury in Taurus is read as deliberate and practical, and a Mercury in Gemini as quick and curious, but real people vary, and the descriptions are tendencies. If a line rings true, enjoy it; if it does not, that tells you something as well. The tool is for reflection and talking points, not for predicting how well you will do at school, work or in conversation.

Mercury is one of three personal planets with their own tools, together with the Venus sign calculator and the Mars sign calculator. The astrology guides explain the signs, and the method page says how we treat astrology as a tradition.

Frequently asked questions

↳ Can Mercury be in a different sign from my Sun?

Yes, but only the sign just before or after it. Mercury is never more than about 28 degrees from the Sun as seen from Earth, so it stays within a sign of the Sun sign. It is likelier to differ when Mercury was far from the Sun on your birth date and your Sun was near the edge of its sign.

↳ Does a retrograde Mercury at birth mean communication problems?

No. Some astrologers read it as a reflective or inward style of thinking, and others ignore it. It is an interpretation, not a prediction, and many people with it describe nothing unusual.

↳ What if I do not know my birth time?

On most days Mercury stays in one sign, and the tool gives it. If Mercury changed sign on your birth date, the tool shows both signs and the time of the change, so you can tell which applies if you know roughly when you were born.

↳ Is this the Western or the Vedic Mercury sign?

It is the tropical sign of Western astrology. The Vedic sidereal sign is usually the previous one, because the two zodiacs are about 24 degrees apart. Our sign in both systems tool shows the two together.

↳ How accurate is the position?

The positions come from Swiss Ephemeris samples, with interpolation to about two arcseconds, so the sign and the degree are reliable. The usual limit is the accuracy of the birth time and place.
