How the life path number is calculated
Your life path number is the main number in Pythagorean numerology, and it comes from your date of birth alone. The method used here, step by step:
- Reduce the month to a single digit by adding its digits.
- Reduce the day in the same way.
- Reduce the year in the same way.
- Add the three results and reduce again.
Master numbers. If any total reaches 11, 22 or 33 it is kept and not reduced, because those numbers are read as master numbers in this tradition. Tick the box above to reduce them to a single digit instead.

Two methods, occasionally two answers
Many calculators add every digit of the date in one go. For most dates the two methods agree. For a minority they do not: 20 January 1990 gives 4 by the method above and 22 when all the digits are added at once. When your date is one of these, the result says so. Neither method is the only correct one, and traditions differ.

In numerology, each life path number is associated with a set of themes, such as independence for 1, cooperation for 2 or self-expression for 3. These are traditional associations for reflection.
