For the Pythagoreans four was the tetrad and the second square number (2 x 2). Ancient sources report the Pythagoreans treating this figure with reverence, and some report them swearing by it. Four also matched familiar groupings in the ancient world, such as the four classical elements. Later writers linked squares to justice and steadiness, which is the ancestor of the modern idea of the 4 as firm foundation. As with all the numbers, the modern method of reducing dates was not something ancient writers recorded.

A worked example

For a date of birth of 17 March 1982: March is month 3. The 17th gives 1 + 7 = 8. The year 1982 gives 1 + 9 + 8 + 2 = 20, then 2 + 0 = 2. Adding the parts gives 3 + 8 + 2 = 13, and 1 + 3 = 4.
