The Pythagorean school, from the Greek philosopher Pythagoras (living around the sixth century BCE), is reported to have held that number is the basis of the order of the world. In that thinking, one was the monad, the source from which the other numbers are built: every number is made by adding ones. That is the root of the modern association with origins and beginnings. It is worth being candid about the history: the system that turns birth dates and names into numbers, as used today, took shape in the early twentieth century and is not something Pythagoras himself is known to have written down. A worked example

For a birth date of 2 July 1981: July is month 7, the 2nd stays 2, and 1981 gives 1 + 9 + 8 + 1 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Adding the parts gives 7 + 2 + 1 = 10, and 1 + 0 = 1. The life path number is 1. Adding every digit of the date at once (1 + 9 + 8 + 1 + 0 + 7 + 0 + 2 = 28, then 10, then 1) gives the same answer, so the two methods agree here.
