Crystals by Zodiac Sign

Zodiac stones are one of the most variable parts of crystal tradition. There is no single authority, and lists differ from one book, shop or website to the next, so the stones below are the ones commonly named in modern Western crystal traditions rather than a fixed rule. They should not be confused with birthstones, which follow the month of birth, as explained in our birthstones section.

Everything below is tradition, attributed as such. No stone has been shown to affect character, luck or health, and you should feel free to ignore the lists and choose the stone you like the look of.

Aries

Fire, ruled by Mars.

In many crystal traditions, Aries is paired with stones of red and orange: carnelian, bloodstone and hematite, the last chosen partly because it is iron-rich, and iron is the metal of Mars. Aventurine is also often listed. Read the guides to carnelian, hematite and aventurine.

Taurus

Earth, ruled by Venus.

Taurus is commonly paired with soft pinks and greens, in keeping with Venus: rose quartz, jade, rhodonite and emerald. Many writers choose stones with a steady, tactile quality for this sign. See rose quartz, jade and rhodonite.

Gemini

Air, ruled by Mercury.

For Gemini, modern lists often give citrine, tiger’s eye, rhodonite and agate, reflecting the sign’s association with curiosity and variety. Lists differ more for Gemini than for some other signs. See citrine, tiger’s eye and rhodonite.

Cancer

Water, ruled by the Moon.

Cancer is linked with the Moon, so in many crystal traditions the stones are moonstone, selenite and pearl, all with a pale, glowing look. Read moonstone and selenite, and remember that both selenite and pearl should be kept away from water and acids.

Leo

Fire, ruled by the Sun.

Leo is often given sun-coloured stones: citrine, tiger’s eye, carnelian, pyrite and aventurine. The idea is that golden and orange stones echo the Sun. See citrine, tiger’s eye and pyrite.

Virgo

Earth, ruled by Mercury.

For Virgo, lists commonly include amazonite, peridot and moss agate, the greens and blue-greens associated with the sign’s practical, tidy image. Sources disagree about Virgo more than most. Read the amazonite guide.

Libra

Air, ruled by Venus.

Libra shares its ruler with Taurus, so rose quartz and jade often appear here too, along with opal. The Libra stones are usually described as soft and balancing in look, though that is a matter of tradition. See rose quartz and jade.

Scorpio

Water, ruled by Mars.

Sagittarius

Fire, ruled by Jupiter.

Sagittarius is commonly paired with blues: turquoise, lapis lazuli and sodalite, and sometimes labradorite. The blues are often linked with travel and wide horizons, reflecting the sign’s image. See turquoise, lapis lazuli and sodalite.

Capricorn

Earth, ruled by Saturn.

Capricorn is often given grounded, dark or earthy stones: garnet, black tourmaline, smoky quartz, tiger’s eye, fluorite and malachite, and lists vary widely. See garnet, smoky quartz and fluorite.

Aquarius

Air, ruled by Saturn.

Aquarius is linked with amethyst, amazonite and garnet in many lists, along with other blues and purples. These stones are associated with independence and originality in the image of the sign. See amethyst and amazonite.

Pisces

Water, ruled by Jupiter.

Pisces is usually paired with amethyst, aquamarine, fluorite and sometimes turquoise, stones of sea and twilight colours. In many traditions they are read as dreamy and reflective. See amethyst, fluorite and turquoise.

Choosing without a list

Many people find that they pick a stone for its colour, its feel in the hand or a memory attached to it, rather than for a zodiac list. That is a perfectly good way to choose, and it is how many of the traditions began. If you like the idea of a stone for your sign, treat the lists above as a starting point and read the guide to any stone before you buy, so that you know how to look after it.
