A full moon is one instant for the whole planet, but the clock date is not. The full moon of the evening of 20 February 2027 in New York, for example, is already the early hours of 21 February in New Delhi, which is why each city has its own column. Readers in other places can start from the UTC time. The final column shows the Moon’s tropical sign and degree at that moment.

How the traditional names work

Each full moon’s name comes from the month it falls in by New York time, the convention used by North American almanacs, so a moon close to midnight can carry a different name elsewhere. The origins of Wolf, Snow, Worm and the rest are on the full moon names page. New moons have no names in this scheme, and Indian lunar months follow their own reckoning.

Harvest Moon and Hunter’s Moon in 2027

The Harvest Moon is the full moon that falls closest to the September equinox, and the Hunter’s Moon is the one that follows it. In 2027 the Harvest Moon is the full moon of 15 September, the one closest to the equinox on 23 September (the Sun enters Libra at 6:01 am UTC that day). The Hunter’s Moon follows on 15 October, at 1:46 pm UTC, or 9:46 am in New York. The rule means the Harvest Moon is not always the September full moon: in some years it falls in early October.

Blue Moon in 2027

In its calendar sense, a Blue Moon is the second full moon within one calendar month. Whether a particular moon counts depends on the time zone used, because a full moon close to midnight can land in different months for different readers. In 2027 no calendar month holds two full moons in UTC, New York, London, New Delhi or Sydney time, so there is no Blue Moon in this sense. Looking at the table, each month from January to December has exactly one full moon.

Eclipses and the lunar calendar

Eclipses happen only at a new moon (solar) or a full moon (lunar), and only when the Moon is near the line where its orbit crosses the Sun’s apparent path. In 2027 there are two solar eclipses, an annular one at the new moon of 6 February and a total one at the new moon of 2 August, and three penumbral lunar eclipses at the full moons of 20 February, 18 July and 17 August. For the type, time, degree and visibility of each, see the eclipses in 2027 page. The neighbouring year is in the 2026 calendar.

What the Moon’s sign means in the tradition

The Moon takes about two and a half days to cross each sign, so every full moon and new moon lands in one of the twelve. Astrologers read a full moon as a culmination and a new moon as a fresh start, coloured by the sign involved: a full moon in a water sign is read as emotional, one in an air sign as a time for conversation, and so on. This is an interpretive tradition, which many people use as a prompt for reflection. There is no scientific evidence that the phase or sign of the Moon changes events in people’s lives, and nothing here is a prediction. Plenty of readers simply enjoy using each new moon to set one small intention and each full moon to review it.

To see where the Moon stood at your own birth, try the Sun Moon Rising calculator or read about your Moon sign. The signs in the table use the tropical zodiac that this site uses throughout; sidereal (Vedic) charts place the Moon in a different sign, so do not mix the two systems.

Frequently asked questions

↳ When is the first full moon of 2027?

The Wolf Moon of 22 January 2027, at 12:17 pm UTC, which is 7:17 am in New York and 5:47 pm in New Delhi.

↳ Is there a Blue Moon in 2027?

Not in the calendar-month sense. In UTC, New York, London, New Delhi and Sydney time, no month of 2027 contains two full moons, so there is no Blue Moon by that definition.

↳ When is the Harvest Moon in 2027?

The Harvest Moon is the full moon of 15 September 2027, at 11:03 pm UTC, which is 7:03 pm in New York. It is the full moon closest to the September equinox, and the Hunter's Moon follows on 15 October.

↳ Which full moons are eclipses in 2027?

The penumbral lunar eclipses at the full moons of 20 February, 18 July and 17 August. Penumbral eclipses are subtle and easy to miss. The solar eclipses fall at the new moons of 6 February and 2 August.

↳ Why is the full moon time different in my city?

Times are given in UTC and converted for each city. A full moon late in the evening in one country can fall on the next date in another, and your own local time may differ from every city in the table.

For retrograde dates alongside the moons, see the Mercury retrograde 2027 guide.
