In Western astrology the Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was travelling through at the moment you were born. The tradition links the Sun with the outward self, and the Moon with the inner one: moods, habits, instincts, what feels safe, and what helps you settle when a day has gone badly. Astrologers often say the Sun is what you aim at and the Moon is what you need while you aim.

They are offered for reflection and curiosity, not as fact about any person, and nothing on them predicts your health, your relationships or your money. If a description does not sound like you, that is an ordinary outcome. A Moon sign is one part of a chart, and people are more than one part.
Why birth time matters near a sign change
The Moon moves faster than any other body astrologers use. It crosses a whole sign in about two and a half days, so most people can work out their Moon sign from the birth date alone. The exception is a birth on a day when the Moon changed sign. On such a day, the Moon could be in one sign in the morning and the next sign by the evening, and only the time of birth (and the place, for the correct time zone) settles which one applies.
If you do not know your birth time, the honest answer on a change day is “one of two signs”. Read both pages and notice which one feels closer, rather than trusting a guess. Birth certificates and hospital records are the usual sources for a time; a family member’s memory is less reliable, and astrologers treat a remembered “around noon” with some caution.

Tropical and sidereal, in one paragraph
Western astrology fixes the zodiac to the seasons, with 0 degrees Aries at the March equinox. Vedic astrology fixes it to the stars, and with the Lahiri ayanamsa it runs roughly 23 to 24 degrees behind. So a tropical Moon sign is usually the previous sign in the Vedic zodiac. Neither is called wrong here: they are two traditions with two reference points, and each page below links to its Vedic counterpart, where the Moon sign (the rashi) is the centre of the whole system.
